Normally, the transmission is mostly mechnical. I would check the electrical components around the transmission. Such as the shifter and also any electrical connections going to the transmission. To be on the safe side I would recommend taking it the dealer as this is one of the most expensive parts to fix if it goes bad.

In a manual transmission, it could be a clutch or throw-out bearing (the thrust bearing in the clutch). If it's an automatic, it could be just about anything. Check the transmission fluid level. Start the engine, run it through all the gears, put it in park, leave the engine running. It shouldn't be brown or smell burnt.

the transmission on your saturn is making a noise most likely because it is low on fluid or the transmission is starting to go and you should bring it to a shop to have it checked out

Saturn transmissions are notorious for breaking down. My daughter had a 2003 Saturn Vue and the transmission went, and they cost about $5,000 to replace. At the first hint of trouble, I would get it into a mechanic. She missed the warranty cut off by 5,000 miles and the dealership would not replace it.

sometimes the transmissions gerars get stuck in place and you neeed to disingage in order to clean up the gulk that is making it stop and not letting it go so you need to do a full transmission cleaning of it
