Why do some people say washed vs warshed?

My grandmother always said warshed and I never knew why.

It could be due to a lack of education and the passing on of the error, e. g. to say Warshington instead of Washington. We repeat things the way we hear them. If you grew up hearing "warsh," that's likely what you'll find yourself saying.

The pronunciation "warsh" is characteristic of dialects that have the epenthetic R -- a linguistic term for inserting an extra R sound into a word. It's characteristic of some areas of the American South.
