Why would I need all-terrain tires?

All terrain tires give a good combination of on road performance without giving you extra grip for not so good condition. Tires are either on road or off and all terrain is somewhere in the middle.

All terrain tires typically have stronger sidewall and more plys of rubber. This makes them better suited for a vehicle that might go on more rugged terrain (off road).

All terrain tires are good if you plan on doing off roading with your vehicle. They are usually not well suited to regular around town or highway driving.

All terrain tires are meant to be run both off road but also on roads and highways. They are a lot more tolerable then off-road tires. However they are a lot less capable off-road. If you do most of your driving on roads but would like to do light off-roading then all-terrains are a good idea.

All-terrain tires or tyres as you might call them, were you to be living in Great Briton, would be required if you were driving in a temperate zone, where all seasons are expected.
