Why are they called buildings?

Structures are called buildings because they are built. If something that is carved is called a carving, then it is logical that something that is built would be a building.

The etymology of the word "building" comes from the verb "build" (we "build" these things, so let's call them "build"-ings). The word "build" itself comes from the Old English word "byldan" (to construct a house), which comes from the Proto-Germanic word "buthlam," which itself comes from the Old Frisian word "bodel," meaning "house."
