The cost of money compared to the U.S. Dollar has a big impact on why it is either very expensive or cheap for Americans to visit. Currently, economic sentiment says that the British pound is 'better' than the U.S. Dollar, so it takes more dollars to buy one pound, making it expensive for Americans to travel to Britain.

Countries that are very expensive to visit have something to draw tourists to them. Therefore, airfare and hotels are enormously expensive due to the high demand. Other countries may be cheaper to visit, but they may be poverty stricken or without anything exciting to see or do.

From personal experience, much has to do with the currency exchange rates. Local and government taxes play a major part as well. Shortage of land mass can create higher demand and premiums for a decent place to stay, as well as certain foods. Local poverty levels do their part to create the opposite. Laos is a 70% poverty stricken country.
