The US Supreme Court heard the landmark case in 1962. Essentially, the court found that it is unconstitutional for state officials to create an official school prayer (public schools) and then require students to recite it. The decision was based on the "separation of church and state," owing to the fact that public schools are run by the government.

The Supreme Court case Engel vs. Vitale made it illegal for school officials to require students to join in public prayer. It also made it illegal for school officials to lead public prayer such that it was forced upon students. Students could still choose to pray in private and in student only groups.
