Hong Kong was once a colony of Great Britain. Many residents there still hold British residency and work visas which they kept if they didn't want to live under Chinese rule.

Hong Kong was a British Colony until 1997, when it was returned to China. China allows more democracy and dissent there than it does anywhere else.
