Unlike other kitchen appliances (ie. ovens) refrigerators can be painted with regular paints. Clean the exterior then lightly sand it so the paint will adhere. Apply rust primer over any areas where rust was. When dry paint the entire fridge with a urethane reinforced enamel, such as melamine paint.

You will definitely want to use some kind of enamel spray paint. After you've removed all the rust (this is critical), you'll need to patch the surface, use a primer, undercoat and finally several layers of paint. You can also finish it with a tough clear-coat.

They make special appliance paint for most appliances and various colors. Usually for outer surfaces that don't get hot like refrigerators, dishwashers and front or top of stoves. The paint comes in either a spray or brush on.

If you are repainting a refrigerator or any appliance that has rusted you must sand them frist and then use Appliance paint which they sell in any home repair store or hardware store. You must use appliance paint or the paint job will not hold up very well and you will be forced to repaint it again.

Really you could use pretty much any type of spray paint you want. Just be sure to remove ALL of the rust before painting. If you don't it will bleed back through and keep rusting. It might be a good idea to use a primer before top-coating.
