Your doctor may ask that you don't eat or drink for 6 hours before the biopsy. A lighted instrument is inserted down the nose or mouth and into the lung to clip off a piece of lung tissue.

A lung biopsy is performed during a bronchoscopy in which a small camera on a long thin tube is passed through the mouth into the lung. The patient is given sedation during the procedure. A tiny piece of lung can be clipped for biopsy with the end of the tube.

One procedure is the needle biopsy. You are sedated, but awake during it.An X-ray is used to find out where the testing area on your body is located. Then the needle is inserted into those areas, and all you will feel is a small stinging. After the needle prodedure is over, you will have a chest X-ray.

You can do a needle biopsy through the skin under CT scan guidance. An open biopsy is done as a surgery under anesthesia. An endoscopic biopsy is also possible.
