What is the difference between a rectal thermometer and an oral thermometer?

a rectal thermometer is meant to be used on babies, and is to inserted into the anal cavity. an oral thermometer is meant for anyone, and is to be used in the mouth under the tounge.

Oral and rectal thermometers are very similiar in appearance and function the same. The tip of a rectal thermometer is slightly shorter and more rounded to reduce the risk of injury.
