The differential, or rear end, refers to the mechanical device installed between the drive axles that split the power output to each wheel via gears.

4x4's have two differentials; one for each axle. 4WD is set up like rear-wheel drive, plus a transfer case that sends power both front and back. Both drive shafts turn at the same speed; bad for on-road. All-wheel drive includes a viscous coupling that delivers power front and back, but allows the two axles to turn at different speeds.

A differential is the gear-set positioned between the drive wheels. It consists of a pinion attaches to the driveshaft and turns a larger gear. Then this larger gear in turn moves the axles and the wheels. It's called a differential because it apply different amounts of force to each wheel.

The four by four differential is what changes it from rear wheel drive to four wheel drive. It just turs the front wheels along with the back wheels. It also has different settings like high and low.
