Sheet metal is classified depending on the metals used to make it and its thickness or gauge. Different application require different characteristic. From fabrication you may need material that is easily bent so you need a thinner gauge sheet. You can estimate the gauge need by measuring the thickness and then buying sheets of the same metal in similar thickness.
