If the roots are going straight down usually the tree will do well in dry climates becase the roots will continue down until they find the water they need. Also these trees usually do not fall over in storms the roots go so deep it will hold unless the tree itself is dead.

All trees have one main root that grows straight down. The other roots center out and around the central one in order to help ground the tree and feed it.

All trees have roots that can grow straight down depending on how much they are watered. A tree that has been barely watered will have roots above the earth searching for water. To stop, stick a PBC pipe on the side of the tree so water will reach the roots.
