I have had a tree cut down in my yard and need to kill off the roots. I need ideas on how to do this.

The best natural environmentally safe way to kill the roots is to bore tiny holes into the roots and fill the same with asafoetida (the Hindi word for it is Hing) Hing is generally used for cooking. This Hing rots the roots completely.

If you go to your local home improvement and supply store, check for chemical stump removers. These will usually be compounds of potassium nitrate- also known as salt peter or nitrate of potash. These stump removers help speed up the rotting process. When you follow the directions, those roots can take a few weeks to rot.

If you dont have any special chemicals, you could try putting salt around it and if possible, in the stump.

Saw the stump flush with the ground. Start a compost pile on top of it. The natural gas and heat should rot the stump. Also try drilling holes into it. This will give more surface for water and toxins to rot away at the inside.

Many times roots and stumps can be eliminated by a mixture of baking soda and vinagar. Simply sprinkle the baking around the roots coating it thickly, or fill the stump if it is still available, and then pour about a gallon of vinagar over it and let it fizz.

Boiling water on the tree roots; powdered milk onto the tree roots (rots them); or smothering the tree roots with plastic sheeting with cement blocks on top are the solutions I've read that don't seem to destroy the soil for other plants you want to plant in that same place.
