Database administrators often have to have a good deal of programming knowledge. To keep the database running smoothly and to make the database easy to use for others in the company, the administrator must be adept at identifying bugs in code and then promptly fixing them. An administrator would likely also have some supervisory duties as well.

You will need to understand the process of creating, updating, and maintaining databases, running reports, etc. as directed by staff. You will run metrics to determine where bottlenecks are, and add/remove indexes to improve database performance. Most of all, you will make sure the database is always accessible and properly secured.

Database administrators manage the day-to-day maintenance activities of databases. They usually configure database data backups and restore lost data. They perform database tunning in order to optimize database data structures and database queries.
