This was a time of highly ornate furniture, heavily gilded framing, and organic, curvilinear lines. Genre paintings by Watteau and Boucher depicted gaiety, vanity and sensual courtship among the privileged.

Rococo art was a reflection of the prosperity of the culture of the time and a desire for over-elaboration of design. Extended curves and elaborate ornamentation were used to create the impression of sumptuousness and elegance. Gold was a favorite element in Rococo art. Large scale paintings, decoration and richness of surfaces was favored.
