Ammonia poisoning will make the fish dull-looking and they will swim slower. They appear near surface of water for air and sometimes look as if they are panting or struggling to breathe. Prevent this by not over-feeding and not over-crowding the aquarium. Lower the ph to begin treatment. Change at least 25% of the water regularly-several times weekly if needed.

You'll be able to smell it, definitely. Other than that, sudden fish death, cloudiness in the water and algae death.

Fish getting sick and dying is one way. Also the water might acquire a yellow tint. If the tank is small and overpopuled and the fish are over fed

I think your tank would be cloudy from the ammonia. Too much will make the fish sick in the tank.
