A high calcium level in the blood (hypercalcemia) means calcium is remaining in your blood stream instead of being used to maintain bone or cartilage. Calcium in the blood either binds to proteins in the blood or remains free. If bound calcium exceeds 10 mg. per deciliter of blood, or free calcium exceeds 5. 3, you have hypercalcemia.

Normal blood calcium measures 8. 5 to 10. 4 with minor variations for different labs. Above 12 is high. A few points above that can be quite dangerous.

High calcium levels are actually bad for your body, just as low calcium levels are. It can deteriorate bones,and cause your body to faint. It is usually caused by a high intake of vitamins with calcium.

It may be a condition due to over intake of calcium carbonate. Calcium supplement is good for prevention of osteoporosis but a too high dosage daily may lead to too much vitamin D and overtax the kidneys.
