Great Danes make wonderful family pets as are most types of Terriers. Retrievers are good dogs - but extremely difficult as puppies. Also - don't forget the pound puppies.

It is important to consider breeds that do well with kids and your space and lifestyle constraints. Goldens and labs are great, but large and will require a great deal of exercise. Smaller dogs (westies) are a good alternative if your children know how to do well with dogs.

Good family breeds are cocker spaniels, poodles, labradors and even parsons russells. They all provide love and affection and are easily trained and become very loyal to all family members.

The three tops breeds of dogs that are good with kids are Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Beagles. Beagles are very gentle and are rarely agitated. Labradors and Retrievers are very loyal and make excellent guard dogs. They also protect the family and small children. They too rarely are agitated even by tail pulling.
