Under what circumstances would someone need to learn about self-catheterization?

A patient may be instructed in what is called "intermittent self-catheritization" to empty the bladder. It is not a common practice.

There are people who need to learn this because for some reason their bladder doesn't work like it should. They may be paralysed or have cancer or something.
