You should do that if you really want to, but try to think about the dog's comfort. Do you want your dog to be an accessory or a companion?

Yes if the dog is female it would only be tacky if the dog is male. But that would be completely up to you I think all dogs are cute when they are dressed up no matter if the color matches the sex.
