How is information stored magnetically on hard drives?

It is stored in many bits. The information is actually in the form of binary code and is clustered together. A magnetic reader writes the binary code to the disc.

Modern hard drives of today usually have at least one glass or aluminum alloy recording platter coated with a very thin magnetic layer, where binary computer data is electromagnetically encoded.

Well to answer that question i would have to go through all magnetic drive history. All you need to know is big magnets can affect your hard drive. Don't get them to close to your hard drive.

Hard disk drive has so-called read-and-write heads and a number of disks, called platters. Disks are covered with a special material that can be magnetized. The read-and-write heads can detect (read) and change (write) the direction of a magnetic field on a platter.

HDDs record data by magnetizing(by means of the read and write head)ferromagnetic material (the hardisk platter) , to represent binary digit. They read the data back by detecting the magnetization of the material.
