Assuming you already have a USB drive, you'll now need a network storage adapter, which plugs into your router. You then plug your hard drive into the adapter and it becomes accessible on your network.

You need to make sure you have enough hard inputs to accomodate the amount of computers you want to link. If you don't have enough, a usb hub can be purchased fairly cheaply from pretty much anywhere. Then you just connect it all up, you will be networked to the drive.

I'm assuming you mean creating networked attached storage (NAS) with a USB hard drive. In this case, you have a couple of options. First, you can get a router with a USB port, and simply plug the thing in. Or, you can share the hard drive over a computer's connection.

An USB hard drive works the same way an external or internal hard drive would. To share files and directories on a hard drive, make sure you have file sharing enabled. In Windows, right click to properties and check share folder/file.

You will need to attach the USB hard drive to a network enabled device. Some routers can publish a USB drive to a network as storage service. Alternatively attach the device to a PC and configure it for sharing the drive over network.

A USB hard drive connects to a computer like any other USB device and will usually be automatically detected. It can then be shared on a network.
