The guitar hero controller that comes standard with the game is plugged into your computer or gaming comsole, and does not need batteries. However, there are wireless controllers that you can buy separately from the game, and those would take batteries. These wireless controllers cost around $55, and can be bought at most stores that sell guitar hero.

The controllers that are wired usually do not need batteries. The wireless guitar controller however do need batteries in order to operate the guitar. Rechargable batteries are great for those controllers.

The instruments used in GH3 will each have their own Wii controller. These will need batteries. For other gaming consoles, you will need batteries. Recharchable would be the best.

The guitars from the game Guitar Hero 3 is wireless, it doesn't plug in, so it does require batteries to operate. There are no chords running between the guitars and the game console.
