Most people do not get tetanus if they were given their vaccinations, which some parents choose not to. The disease is horrible, the muscles in the body start to spasm very painfully, and, if left untreated, can cause death from exhaustion due to spasms and suffocation due to lockjaw.

Yes you can still get tetanus. It is due to a potent poison produced by bacteria. Usually about thirty percent of people who get this disease will die from it. The symptoms of this disease usually produce a whooping cough.

This is rare in the United States where most people are immunized. Once called lock-jaw, due to the tightening of the jaw muscle, the toxin is a risk to those who receive puncture wounds from rusty nails or animal bites, among others. A booster Tetanus shot is highly recommended if injured, but everyone should have one every 10 years.
