When new growth on your orchid begins, the leaves usually fall themselves. Some orchids have deciduous growing times and lose all leaves. If the old leaves or new ones turn yellow or fall off, this can indicate a fungus or a bacteria problem and you will need to take action. If you trim leaves off, use clean tools.

I personally trim all of my plants. As soon as I see the changing seasons has done its toll on my plants, I will cut them all back to make room for new growth. This has kept my gardens and flowers staying beautiful though out all of the past years.

Old orchid leaves should be removed but not discarded. They make wonderful trim decoration for things like potpourri pouches. Many people dry and press them together on stationary paper in binders. Dried, they make a reasonable substitute for mid quality pot. There's not much market for this because no one knows about it.

Orchids are one the hardest plants that I have ever tried to grow. I read a book once that said that it was fine to trim off the old leaves as long as they are already dead. Otherwise, I would leave them.

Yes it is duly necessary to trim off old leaves on orchids as it will help to have a beautiful view of the beautiful coloured flower.
