Temporary or permanent nerve damage can occur from receiving an epidural. Symptoms include numbness and weakness in one or both legs. Symptoms can last a few months. Although rare, permanent nerve damage can occur at the level of the spine where the catheter was inserted. Paralysis of lower extremities and incontinence of bowel and bladder occur.

Although it is very rare to get nerve damage when you get an epidural, it is not unheard of. Anytime you get any type of anesthesia there is always a potential for there to be some kind of risks involved. Many people receive epidurals each day and most have no negative effects once the epidural wears off.
