Will it hurt my puppy if he swallowed small pieces of rawhide?

I have heard different things about rawhide being dangerous for dogs, but was not able to take it away from my puppy prior to him swallowing it.

As long as the pieces are small it shouldn't be an issue. My dogs eat rawhide all the time and have had no issues. The nice thing about small pieces of rawhide is they get soft when soaked in fluid which helps them through the digestive track. Just keep an eye out that your dog continues regular stools.

Your puppy's stomach should dissolve the raw hide, but if your dog begins to show unusual behavior then you should definitely take them to the vet. Unusual behavior could include confusion, fatigue, whimpering(that you cannot resolve)and things of that nature. Depending on what the rawhide is made of, your puppy's stool may be runny or unusually soft.

Watch your pup's stool to make sure he passes the rawhide and that there is no blockage. He may have loose stools for a day or two. Give your dog chew snacks made only in the USA. Never leave him alone while he's chewing, esp toys with bells inside.

He will probably be okay. If something seems wrong with him take him to the Vet RIGHT AWAY. Don't give your dog anything like Porkchop or other meat bones that will splinter. The splinters can essentially stab your dogs insides and cause internal bleeding. Rawhide is on the questionable side. So if you're worried don't give it to your dog.

As long as there are no signs of problems, for instance constipation or an upset tummy, everything should be fine.

If the dog already swallowed it, then there really isn't much you can do other than wait and see what happens. My own puppies have eaten rawhide and swallowed pieces and nothing happened. I have heard the same horror stories when I worked at a greyhound race track. If you are extremely worried, take your puppy to the vet.
