Catalytic converters are designed to get hot to burn off the excess emissions before they are released as exhaust. Usually there is a heat shield to prevent you from seeing it. If it seems to be getting unusually hot it may be clogged.

This could be a fuel problem, as engine sending too much raw fuel to the cat to burn. Check also the spark plugs or wires it maybe one of the factors. Running with a cat burning red hot for long can cause the cat to fail, and in worse scenarios even burn through the floorboard.
