Why is the "check engine" light on in my Kia Sportage?

I just had it in for service last week.

The check engine light may come on to let you know that a scheduled service is coming up soon. In the case of the Sportage, it may be true that the shop you took it too simply forgot to reset the system in your car so that the light would not come on to remind you about the service.

The OnBoard Diagnostic equipment is kicking up a code. Take it to a dealership and have it scanned. It could be quite a few things.

Well that light indicates that there is a engine issue. Either take it to a mechanic or check the codes yourself. It maybe to to something being incorrectly serviced.

It could be a number of things. It could be a bad injector, misfire, or even just a gas cap. Your best bet is to take it to Auto Zone and they will hook up the computer tester for free and tell you exactly what the problem is with the vehicle.

If it was on before the service was done then it might be as simple as them forgetting to reset it. If it came on after the service was done then take it to Autozone or Advanced Autoparts and they will tell you why it's on for free. It may be due to something done wrong during the service.

Your engine's catalytic converter is set by the computer to activate a red light when a certain mileage is reached. It is purely formal and not necessarily because there is a problem with the engine.
