Why is my Gateway laptop monitor black?

It was working fine and then just turned black.

There's two things it could be. One is that you sent the output the another device (that sometimes happens if you press FN and F5, try it again and see if it comes back. If It's not that, then it may be that the monitor died, or the connection between the motherboard and monitor short circuited.

The laptop monitor is black because the LCD screen is spoilt. Alternatively, you could have gone into sleep mode due to computer inactivity. Please attempt to enter some keys to wake the computer up. If the computer screen is still black, please attempt a hard reset. If all else fail, please bring to the nearest Gateway repair center for repair.

you could have turned it black by pressing the "fn" key together with the screen key, disabling the screen. Otherwise the screen is broken or you have a virus.

Make sure the power cable is plugged in fully. If you still don't get anything, your cord may be bad and the laptop may subsequently have drained the battery.

Most likely your backlight has gone bad. To know for sure, grab a flashlight when the laptop is on and shine it on the screen. If you see some images that's the case and you will need to install a new screen.
