Why is my 25 hp Briggs and Stratton popping and backfiring?

It is one year old.

The engine is popping and backfiring because the throttle is putting out too much fuel. When the engine is turned off the extra fuel is blown out the muffler. To stop this, turn the throttle down half way for a few moments before turnign the engine off and the backfiring should not occur.

First check the fuel. If it is one year old, did it sit with fuel in it unused all season. Change the fuel to new fuel. Try checking the fuel lines for clogs. Check the spark plugs for a good spark. Check the choke. If the choke is set to low that will give you the same reactions.
