For well-to-do residents of nearby Guadalajara, the beautiful Lake Chapala area has long been a popular place for weekend homes. More recently, Americans have been buying Lake Chapala real estate to retire there, because the low cost of living makes it possible to live well on a modest income.

In the last few years, many retired people, mostly from the Canada and United States settled in that area and build retirement community. The reason for that are natural beauty, friendly people, pleasant lifestyle and mild climate during the most of the year.

Due to good weather and beautiful scenery the villages on the north shore of Lake Chapala have attracted a large number of retired people from Canada and the United States. These "Snow Birds" as they are called in Canada, have brought in money and a demand for services in the small area.
