Public transportation mainly works in broad strokes, getting people from one general area (a mall) to another general area (downtown). It doesn't work as well for people going from home to a specific job site. No one wants to leave home too early or walk too far to work.

i think more people on the east coast use public transportation because the cities are older and more compact. in the west, though, the cities are designed around cars and highways, so public transportation is very impractical.

I live in a rural area so I am not sure why those in cities might not use public transportation. Perhaps they just prefer to drive themselves to their destination. In the area where I live, there is no public transportation. We have no buses, trains, or even taxis.

Not very many people use public transportation in the US for a variety of reasons. One is that we are anti-social. We like lots of privacy, and a personal automobile just seems safer than a bus or a train. Another is that the routes of public transportation are often inconvenient.

i think over 40,000 people die a year in car crashes in the U.S... i think that public transportation is significantly safer than an automobile.  add a comment

In my opinion, more people do not use public transportation because it in not as handy as getting in your own car and driving, and in the outlying areas it is not available. We live in a rural area and we have no public transportation.

i think that you have probably not experienced heavy traffic or the difficulties in finding parking in a dense city. in compact urban areas, public transit is often much more convenient than driving. I think the problem in the US is that we don't have extensive public-transit systems.  add a comment
