You could have "twisted" your ankle somehow causing a sprain/strain injury. You may also have had direct trauma to the area. This could be severe trauma or a very minor which caused swelling to occur in the area. Get it checked out if it doesn't resolve in a few days.

There may be a fracture in your ankle and that is why the top of it is hurting. You may have pulled a muscle or gotten a sprain. Try stretching your ankle in a circular motion.

You could have sprained it or just strained the tendons. Or, you could have a spider bite or even bee sting. Best thing to do is to see your doctor.

Pain on top of your ankle could be due to a problem involving the ankle region (such as the ankle joint surfaces or lining, or a tendon crossing the joint).
