When your information is turned over to a collection agency, the agency has to try to collect the debt because they have been paid to do so.

I'm sorry your question is unclear. I suspect your asking why they can't delete your debt from a credit report. The credit reports are compiled by national companies, Equifax, Experian and Transunion and only they can edit credit reports. You have the right to have them fix any incorrect information.

They really are not supposed to simply delete your debt from your report after you settle a debt because your report is record of all your credits and debts for the last seven years. However, they will often negotiate to remove their complaint if you offer to settle the debt.

If you have proof that you have paid the bill they are dunning you for, send proof in a registered letter giving them thirty days or take legal action.

The collector is only collecting on the debt others have reported past due. If you owe money to a hospital, you must contact the hospital if it is in error.
