Lowered blood sugar, lowered oxygen levels and general tiredness can cause memory to cease registering things from long term memory into awareness. A deep breath often precedes remembering.

Memory is entirely ruled by the connections between the neurons in the brain. As we age, new connections are constantly being established, and old connections may atrophy over time. As the older connections become less used, the electrical impulses don't travel as freely, or directly.

Memory is a product of the brain retrieving information by synapses firing. If our brain, and thus memory, is impaired, it will not work well; this includes when drunk, drugged, or exhausted. Our memory may also fail when our mind cannot make the mental connections and associated necessary to retrieve the desired information.

Stress and getting old hinder our memory. If you are too tired from work, you forget some other things because you are focused on one thing.
