Smoke detectors chirp with the batteries are getting old and dying. It can be very annoying and the chirping will not stop unless you take the batteries out. Simply replace the batteries and the chirping will go away. This is a simple fix when you consider the protection that smoke detectors provide for you and your family.

If you smoke detector chirps I think that it is time to get a new one. Some detectors are not make to last forever although they do last a long time. We test ours in my house from time to time. This is just to make sure they are in proper working order. Hopefully we won't need to use it.

Most likely the batteries are low, so you need to check and test the detector then go and buy new ones.

Smoke detectors chirp when they need attention. Most often they need is a new battery. Since smoke detectors can save lives, change the batteries before they start chirping (many people recommend changing batteries when you change time from Daylight Savings to regular and vice versa).

The smoke detector will chirp regularly ( maybe once an hour ) to let you know the battery is still good. If the smoke detector stops chirping, you will need to probably replace the battery so you have protection in case of a fire. Changing the batteries of your smoke detector annually is always a good idea.
