If you have just recently purchased the betta, they are often stressed at the store and paler than their normal color. As a betta makes itself at home it will naturally become darker. Another reason fish change color is simply a change in aquarium conditions. A change from florescent to normal lighting will cause an apparent darkening of a betta.

Often fish will darken if they are sick or somehow affected by the environmental conditions in the tank. Nitrate poisoning is often associated with darkening in fish. Check the water quality in the tank and it could alleviate the problem.

Betta's colors have a lot to do with their diet. Your betta's face maybe darker beacuse of not having a good diet. Meal worms are the best food source for bettas and bring out brilliant colors.

If your Betta's face is looking darker it means that you are caring for your fish properly and he is relaxing enough to show his true colors. If your Betta's face was getting paler, then you would have to look for something wrong as that indicates stress or illness.

All fish like all animals have variance in their pigmentations. A dark face is normal. If it get darker with time its probably a change in diet.

Betta may tend to change the colour a bit depending on the surrounding water contents. It may not be the face alone but the whole body. You may relate this to the change of body colour of human beings or for that matter any sensitive animals when exposed to severe winter or summer.

If your betta's face appears darker, he may have velvet which will kill him if not treated in time. Its a parasitic disease that can be treated with coppersafe. Notice any other abnormalities that your fish may have like rubbing against the tank.
