I would purchase a basic "trouble-shooting" kit. This includes a temperature gauge, a set of sockets, and allen wrenches designed for Hvac units. Your AC manual has a bi-unit schematic.
Your air conditioner shuts off when the thermostat indicates that it has reached the set point temperature. If it is shutting off before the set point, call a service man.
