Why do you need a sodium blood test?

My mother's doctor ordered one for her but did not tell her why.

Sodium chloride is the chemical name for table salt. A sodium blood test will therefore measure the salt concentration in the blood. If high levels of salt are detected in the blood it can sometimes be an indication of high blood pressure, due to the lower levels of solute (the liquid part) in the blood.

The doctor may have ordered this test to determine an electrolyte imbalance and if it is affecting sodium levels If your mother is taking medication, he may check the sodium level to monitor its effectiveness. Alternatively, the doctor could have ordered the test to check for a condition he might suspect such as dehydration and edema.

A sodium blood test is to test to see how much sodium, or salt, is in your blood. This will help determine if someone has high blood pressure or not.
