Why do you add a knot to a heaving line?

It doesn't seem to serve any purpose.

If you try to throw a heaving line without a knot in it, you won't be able to throw it very far and or accurately. If you tie a knot in the end - traditionally a monkey fist, it acts as a weight allowing you to throw the line further and more accurately.

Traditionally a knot called a monkeys fist is tied in the end of a heaving line. This know resembles a volley ball and can be tied around any spherical object. When this knot is tied in the end of a heaing like it acts like a weight. This makes the lines go farther and allows for more accurate throws.
