Why do ranchers put boots on fence post?

Many ranchers wear cowboy boots as that is what they are used to. Cowboy boots are very durable however like everything else they eventually wear out. Ranchers are very resouceful and when this happens they put the boots on top of the posts to keep them covered and prevent rain water from seeping into the posts and rotting them out.

ranchers will hang boots on a fencepost for both the reasons listed above but they also hang them close to the house first for multiple reason first to show experience farming and also so during a blizzard you can find the house for help or if your looking for shelter

Sometimes a rancher will put boots on the fence post to honor the passing of a beloved horse, a hired hand or fallen comrade. Also, before telephones were invented, a rancher would indicate he was home by haning boots on the fence to let visitors know he was home and the workday was over.
