I think that people like heavy metal music because it has a good beat. They can escape into the sheer solid sounds of the drums and feel their bodies move with the beat. The lyrics are often heavy and rough which pairs well with the music. Heavy metal is strong and the people who listen to it appreciate that strength.

Most people listen to heavy metal music because it's dark and grungy. The lyrics aren't usually hidden behind clever quips or a play on words. In bands like Killswitch Engage and more relevant Metalica, you notice that their lyrics are straight to the point. They aren't afraid to throw out a violent stanza in between hard guitar riffs.
