The color of dog's gums can vary depending on breed, age, and health. If your dog has been to the vet and has a clean bill of health, the black color of your dogs gums is likely due to his breed. If the black area is inflamed or enlarged it may be a health problem.

Well if your dog normally has nice pink gumes then you need to take it to the vet but if you have always noticed the gums having a black color to them then thats the skin color.

This is fairly common of older canines. Dogs have a different mouth flora (bacteria colonies). Their plaque is different from humans and can get black in color, its nothing to worry about.

First determine whether your dog has always had dark gums or is it new, Healthy animals have a bright pink color to the gums. This may indicate an emergency such as shock, loss of blood, or anemia. Some dogs naturally have a darker color to their inner lips or gums.

Some dogs naturally have gums that are black due to melanin. If the dog has just black spots on the gums, this could be dental disease. If there is any question about this, ask your vet.

The pigment in the dog's gums determine the color. Lots of breeds have black gums, and this is the correct breed standard coloring for those breeds.

Some dogs are genetically predispositioned to have black colored gums. Some have black spots on them also. If you are concerned, a visit to your vet may be in order.
