A hurricane gets it's forming energy from the hot and dry plains of Africa. Then as heated air moves off the west coast of Africa it evaporates large amounts of water. The air mass moves westward into the Caribbean where the warm moist air helps generate cyclonic rotation and winds.

African storms are large enough with enough moisture and thermal energy and at the right latitude for proper hurricane formation to occur.

The warm waters make a hurricane grow as it crosses the seas. Hurricanes start off as a tropical storm and as they travel over water pick up strength. When the hurricane hits land it strength weakens as the storm passes over the land. Warm waters are the key to hurricanes.

Tropical waves are areas of low pressure that move westwards across the African continent. They travel over the tropic and subtropic regions near the equator. They blow off the West African coast and over the warm Atlantic waters. Here they feed on the heat and water vapor becoming tropical storms and hurricanes that blow across the Atlantic toward America.

Because it is a tropical area close to the equator. The ocean flows different there. It could have to do with the shape of the country.
