The dog may be acting out. If it is left alone for long periods of time or just doesn't like it when you leave it eats carpet to make itself feel better. You should take the dog to the vet they can usually give medicine for behavior like this. You may also consider getting another dog, it helped mine.

It depends if it's a puppy then it may be using your carpet to cut it's teeth on. If it isn't then there may be something on the carpet the dog likes. Or the dog is lacking something in it's diet.

Dogs have an inherent need to chew on objects. This keeps their teeth strong and healthy. In the wild they would crack and chew bones, rawhide is best for your pet.

There are a couple reasons why dogs might eat carpet. The most common reason is boredom. If a dog is bored and has nothing else to do they will result in some kind of destructive behavior which might include eating carpet.

Their teeth are itchy because it is growing and they need to scratch it with something else just like slippers, wood, so do carpets. It is also good so their incisors will not be too sharp.
