A number of reasons and it's a natural part of their makeup. However, inside it could be boredom, nesting, could be a sign of anxiety or unrelased energy.

Typically dogs paw at the carpet to make a nest for themselves and to be more comfortable. Dogs still have the instinct to clean their area as if they were outside to move rocks, sticks, etc.

Carpet to a dog is like dirt. By instinct they dig. Often they digging is related to nesting; preparing their space to lie down and rest.

For two reasons. It feels really good to them. It also is a way of relieving boredom. If you don't like your dog doing that make sure you tell him "NO! " every time you catch him.

In the wild wolves dig into the ground to make beds that are warmer than simply laying above ground. Since dogs descended from wolves they still do this, even though there is usually no need for it now.

They are often trying to see what the texture is all about. Dogs often dig at the ground prior to laying down.
