During a root canal the inside of the tooth is drilled out and the root is killed. This weakens the tooth making it more susceptible to tooth decay. Eating hard food can brake a tooth that had a root canal on it. This can happen years after the root canal.

If the molar is not capped after the RCT, then it will break off becuase the tooth becomes brittle after a root canal treatment due toloss of its blood supply. The tooth is dead and needs to be prtected from getting chipped off by covering it with a cap.
