They joined because they wanted to help the world, to serve their country and the world's needs in non-military ways. They joined because they wanted to combat poverty and injustice.

I joined because I was a math graduate without a job and didn't want to just go back home. It was the best decision I ever made.

I feel joining the peace corps is a choice since no payment is required. These people volunteer to help others around the world who are in desparate need of help from education to planting crops. It use to be so many countries in need but now the US has need.

I think that some were just getting out of college and wanted something major to add to their resume. Some of them in the 1960's were probably inspired to service by President John Kennedy.

For those who want experience in international development or non-profit work in the developing world, the peace corps provided free travel, room, board and in some cases training. This is far cheaper than paying to study abroad.
